According to the agreement, 90% of the goods exported to India will be lowered, and 85% of the goods will achieve zero tariffs within 10 years. Tariffs for whiskey and gin will be cut to halve from 150% to 75% and to 40% in 10 years. Under the quota system, automobile tariffs will be reduced from 100% now to 10%. Tariffs for other commodities such as cosmetics, aviation products, lamb, medical devices, motors, soft drinks, chocolates and biscuits have also been lowered.
It is also reported that 99% of India's exports to Britain will achieve zero tariffs.
The UK government said the agreement is expected to increase the UK-India bilateral trade volume by 25.5 billion pounds a year, driving the UK's GDP to increase by 4.8 billion pounds a year by 2040. British consumers will be able to enjoy cheaper Indian goods such as clothing, footwear, frozen shrimp, etc.
After the UK left the EU, trade negotiations with India began in January 2022.
