Rural elementary school students are eyeing "Campus Guinness"

"Come on Liu Zixuan! Come on!" In Guji Primary School, Jieshou City, Anhui Province, cheers were heard one after another. The third campus Guinness Challenge with the theme of "Energetic Campus, Challenge Without Limits" is in full swing. The challenge lasts for 4 days and covers 12 events in three categories: sports competition, intelligence competition and labor skills. The competitions are suitable for students of different personalities, including one-minute rope skipping, one-minute table tennis hitting the wall, Daliwang arm wrestling, hula hoop, one-minute quick calculation, and one-minute peanut clipping. More than 1,000 students enthusiastically participated.

"3, 2, 1, start!" The skipping rope arena was instantly boiling. Fifth-grade student Liu Zixuan set a new school record with a score of 230 times a minute, 66 more than the previous school record, and won rounds of applause during the competition. "I usually dance more than 180 times per minute. This time I feel very surprised and happy." said Liu Zixuan, who is thin, said.

A year ago, Liu Zixuan participated in the Hula Hoop Challenge in the school Guinness Challenge, and her grades were not outstanding. Later, by chance, she saw a rope skipping competition on TV, "I wanted to try it!" So Liu Zixuan signed up for the school after-class rope skipping interest group, and practiced rope skipping whenever she had time, from 148 to 172 to 208, until this time she broke the school record.

On the other hand, in the Hula Hoop Challenge, fifth-grade girl Liu Jiayue fought fiercely with two classmates for 60 minutes, and no one was willing to stop first and finally share the honor of first place. "I didn't expect that I could last for so long!" Liu Jiayue panted but looked proud, "The teacher said this was a double test of endurance and concentration."

In the One-Minute Speed Calculation Challenge, fifth-grade student Huang Haoyu set the record at the speed of completing 49 calculation questions in one minute. Huang Haoyu participated in the one-minute quick calculation of the first challenge in 2023 and won the first place with a score of 19 questions per minute. In his opinion, it was expected that the record was set. "The challenge held by the school can show off one's own skills and will not let your strengths be buried." Although Huang Haoyu is only 11 years old, his words show calmness and confidence.

Fourth-grade student Jia Xinyang participated in the Campus Guinness Challenge for the second time this year. He picked up 50 peanuts in one minute with chopsticks and won the championship in this event. In addition, in the one-minute fixed-point shooting challenge, he scored 12 basketballs, setting a new school record. "He usually has a wide range of hobbies and often helps us do some work within our ability at home. Although he is short, he likes to play basketball." Jia Xinyang's mother introduced. In her eyes, since she participated in the first campus Guinness Challenge, her son has become confident and actively participated in cultural and sports activities.

Unlike the previous two Guinness Challenges, this year the school has deeply integrated labor education with Guinness activities, and has set up new labor skills projects such as "one minute peanuts" and "smart hand bundling books", continuing the tradition of "labor results as prizes" - award-winning students can receive agricultural products such as green onions and potatoes grown from the labor base. Principal Mark Que said: "These prizes with the fragrance of the earth are both respect for labor and the value of "everything is rewarding."

Jieshou, located in the northern Anhui Plain, was called Yangcheng in ancient times. In recent years, this small town has attached great importance to education and reading in books. How to promote the comprehensive development of students' morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics and labor has become a proposition actively explored by local schools.

Among them, Guji Primary School took the lead in proposing the school-running concept of "running sunny education and nurturing agile teenager", hoping that every student would be born towards the sun, love reading, exercise, and be good at thinking. "Youths should be like they should be! Li Yuting, a track and field sprinter who was selected for the Olympics twice, is from our Guji Town. We call on all students in the school to learn from Li Yuting and actively participate in sports activities." Ma Kekui said that in 2023, the school held the first campus Guinness Challenge. During the publicity and mobilization stage, students were enthusiastic about participating in the competition, but some teachers and parents were worried that sports would affect students' performance. For this reason, the school held many teacher meetings and parent meetings to change their concepts.

The campus Guinness Challenge has been held for three consecutive years. The project extends from the initial sports competition and intellectual competition to the combination of labor skills, moral education and aesthetic education, and ultimately builds a stage for children to show their confidence. Mr. Zhang Wenying, the head of Guji Primary School Campus Guinness Challenge, found that students discovered their own highlights during the preparation and participation process, and many children became more agile. "We are a rural school with many left-behind children. The school's activities have given some special students from families a spirit," said Zhang Wenying.

At the end of April, wheat seedlings burst into blue waves in the wind. Part of the vegetables produced at Guji Primary School’s planting base is used in campus canteens, and some are distributed as prizes. In January this year, at a semester school breaking ceremony, Jia Xinyang was named the school's "Sunshine Boy" for the comprehensive development of morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics and labor, and won a special prize - a bundle of green onions, two cabbages, and a piece of pork. "These agricultural products are the fruits of our own labor. Now they are given as prizes to us, which is particularly meaningful."
