Mexican President Announces Sues Google for the Rename Change of the Gulf of Mexico

Xinhua News Agency, Mexico City, May 9 (Reporter Zhai Shurui and Wu Hao) Mexican President Claudia Sinbaum said on the 9th that the Mexican government has filed a legal lawsuit against Google, accusing Google of the United States, accusing Google of renamed the "Gulf of Mexico" to the "Gulf of America" in its map service for US users.

At a regular press conference on the 9th, Sinbaum said that the Mexican side has filed a formal prosecution for Google's name change. But she did not disclose the specific court agency and time point for filing.

Trump signed an executive order in January this year to rename the "Gulf of Mexico" to the "Gulf of America". On May 8, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill requiring federal agencies to rename the Gulf of Mexico in all maps and documents to the Gulf of America.

"The U.S. government has no right to name the entire area of sea. According to international rules, the Gulf of Mexico is a water shared by multiple countries and its name has international legal effect."

The Gulf of Mexico is a body of water south of the United States and east of Mexico. The name has been used since the 16th century. Before the Mexican-Mexico War between 1846 and 1848, Texas, California, and New Mexico, the United States today belonged to Mexico at that time. After the US-Mexico War, Mexico was greatly damaged and lost a large area of territory. Some historians point out that the US-Mexico War was "the biggest land plunder in the history of this type of war."
