The suspense drama "Sandstorm" is currently on the air on Youku. The drama is linked to a new case of boiler corpse burning across eight years, revealing the human rift behind the rural acquaintance society. The hard-core reasoning technique returns to its true "suspense" nature, and the audience relishes digging deep into the details of the play and discussing the character's fate and behavioral motivation.
Zhao Dongling, a screenwriter of "Sandstorm", revealed in an interview with a reporter from Beijing Youth Daily that it took three years to polish this story. She said this is not a simple case-solving story. Suspense dramas should not be just a puzzle game, but also a mirror that reflects the times and human nature. Zhao Dongling said, "I hope "Sandstorm" can become such a mirror."
The first time I wrote a suspense drama
Zhao Dongling is a famous TV drama screenwriter in my country. Among his many household works, there are many judicial-related topics such as "Police Honor", "Fearless", and "In the Name of Law". "Although this is my first time writing a suspense drama, I feel that I have prepared for this day for many years." She has had a preference for suspense-type stories since she was a child, and has been involved in a lot of things in "The Sherlock Holmes Detective", Japanese mystery novels, American dramas of the same theme. But what Zhao Dongling cares more about shaping characters and finding clear themes under the premise of rigorous logic.
The fate of "Sandstorm" has been a real case introduced by the prosecutor to Zhao Dongling during an interview many years ago. "A corpse suddenly fell out of the boiler, and the coal ash in the sky came over the face of the truth. That scene took root in my mind, so I wanted to start to push back the story." As the drama is called, "Sandstorm" not only reflects the harsh living environment, but also metaphors the cruel truth and human nature hidden by yellow sand in acquaintance society. "I set up a border town, a city with exhausted resources, and everyone in it has gone out, and the rest are struggling to find a way out and fight fate."
Look at the backwards
Talking about the original intention of establishing the theme, Zhao Dongling said that she has created many main theme works, and her eyes are mainly aimed at the trendsetters of the times. "Such characters are indeed worthy of our creation and will become role models in our lives. But what about those behind-the-scenes people? This is a question that I often think of when writing other works in the past. I think "Sandstorm" makes up for my regret."
Although the film is only 12 episodes long, Zhao Dongling has focused on creating nearly 10 characters, each with history, ongoing actions, and their delicate psychological conflicts.
What she likes very much is the complex relationship between Wang Liang and Liu Yingying: Wang Liang is a character from the past era. He has never received true love since childhood, nor has he learned how to love. He can say that he has never seen the normal relationship between modern society and modern people. It is precisely because of his ignorance and kindness that led to the tragedy. The role of Liu Yingying has devoted a lot of hard work to Zhao Dongling and the director. "A very sympathetic female image. She had a bright future and was forced to become a victim in the desperate situation. But she showed tenacious vitality in the desperate situation." Another female image that Zhao Dongling likes very much is Sun Caiyun. "She is a rare female image in film and television works, without any scruples, and she has endless imagination. It can be said that the reason why the story of "Sandstorm" can be produced is closely related to Sun Caiyun's imagination."
Praise the actor's performance
Zhao Dongling also praised the actor's performance. Especially Duan Yihong, the actor who plays the male lead policeman Chen Jianghe. "Because in this type of crime story, the main stories are all in the suspects, and it is particularly difficult for the police to perform well. I think the reason why Chen Jianghe is so attractive is absolutely related to Duan Yihong's creation. He gave this northwest rough man a vivid vitality." The female lead Zhang Jianing used to be the image of a good girl and a girl next door in film and television dramas, and Liu Yingying made a great breakthrough. Zhao Dongling also said that at the beginning, the creative team did not think that Zhang Jianing was suitable for this role. "The reason she starred in was because her love touched all of us. We can now say that love is the primary productive force, and Zhang Jianing's performance is very amazing." (Text/Beijing Youth Daily reporter Yang Wenjie coordinated/Man Yi)
