It's decided, US Treasury Secretary Bescent will preside over tariff negotiations with Japan

US President Trump announced on Monday local time that Japan is organizing a team to negotiate on the US-Japan trade issue. Trump revealed that he had a telephone conversation with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba earlier that day, and the two agreed to appoint representatives in charge of trade negotiations.

US Treasury Secretary Bescent later published a document through social media platform X to confirm that Trump has authorized him to lead trade negotiations with Japan on behalf of the United States. "Japan has always been one of the closest allies of the United States," Becent emphasized in his statement that the two sides will focus on negotiating core issues such as tariff policies, non-tariff trade barriers, exchange rate mechanisms and government subsidies.

It is worth noting that, in accordance with the conventional process of U.S. trade negotiations, such matters are usually handled by the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR). The direct intervention of the Treasury Secretary in the negotiation team may indicate that the US side will put pressure on the issue of continued weakness in the yen against the dollar. As of press time, the US dollar against the Japanese yen exchange rate remained at 147.
