Tariff negotiations are slow, EU is preparing for new trade proposals with the United States

According to Bloomberg on May 15, the EU is revising a potential trade deal proposal with the United States as the first step to start formal negotiations. The Trump administration still has not provided clear information and continues to make demands that the European side considers unrealistic. The EU plans to add more details on reducing trade and non-tariff barriers to its new proposal, including encouraging investment in the United States and the procurement of U.S. liquefied natural gas and artificial intelligence chips.

After the U.S.-UK reached a preliminary agreement, some EU member states officials expressed optimism about the prospect of a tariff agreement with the United States. Poland's Deputy Secretary of State Mihal said that there are currently "signs of optimism" and US-Europe negotiations are accelerating.

There are differences within the EU regarding the treatment of the US-UK agreement. Swedish Foreign Trade Minister Benjamin said that if the EU only receives the same treatment as the UK, it will be considered "unfair" and warned the US that it should expect the EU to take countermeasures.

The EU is preparing to impose counter-tariffs when negotiations fail. Although the United States has currently suspended the imposition of some tariffs on the EU in exchange for negotiation space, EU officials revealed that if a satisfactory agreement cannot be reached, a new round of countermeasures will be promoted.
