News says ByteDance plans to launch AI smart glasses and is negotiating with suppliers

Phoenix Technology News On April 11, The Information reported that according to two people familiar with the matter, ByteDance is planning to launch its own AI smart glasses. The news marks the increasing view of smart wearable devices as the next emerging market for AI services.

According to one of the people familiar with the matter, ByteDance is expected to provide AI functions similar to the self-developed model bean bag in its smart glasses.

At present, the time and sales area for ByteDance to launch this smart glasses have not yet been determined. According to people familiar with the inside story, ByteDance is negotiating with suppliers to determine product functions, technical specifications, costs and release time. A ByteDance spokesperson has not responded to a request for comment.

In October last year, ByteDance entered the field of AI hardware for the first time and launched the Ola Friend, a wireless headset equipped with AI capabilities in China. This headset allows users to talk to ByteDance’s Doubao chatbot without using their phone. Students can use it to practice speaking foreign languages, and travelers can also learn about travel destinations through it. However, Ola Friend, which costs 1,199 yuan, has not gained wide recognition from the market.

The company's engineers are solving many technical problems, such as how to ensure that glasses can capture high-quality images and videos without sacrificing too much battery life.

ByteDance has many years of experience in the consumer hardware field. In 2021, the company acquired VR helmet maker Pico for $1.3 billion. But at the end of 2023, as Pico helmet sales failed to meet expectations, ByteDance reduced its VR business and canceled its launch plan for Pico's new flagship helmet. (Author/Chen Junxi)
