Phoenix Technology News Beijing time April 14, Reuters reported that Facebook's parent company Meta will face a major trial in Washington starting Monday. The Federal Trade Commission accused Meta of building an illegal social media monopoly giant through its acquisition of Instagram and WhatsApp. In the case, the FTC tried to ask the court to revoke the transactions.
The FTC said the two acquisitions, more than a decade ago, were designed to eliminate emerging competitors that could threaten Facebook's status as a social platform for users' preferred. The agency filed the lawsuit in 2020, when Trump was in his first presidency.
Meta Chief Legal Officer Jennifer Newstead posted a blog post last Sunday saying the case is untenable and will hit investment in the technology industry.
"The FTC is trying to split a great American company, while the U.S. government is trying to save China-owned TikTok, which is ridiculous," Newsted said.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is expected to testify in court, when he will answer inquiries about the content of the email. In those emails, he proposed to acquire Instagram, a photo sharing app, to remove threats from a potential Facebook competitor, and he also expressed concerns that the encrypted messaging service WhatsApp could develop into a social network.
