The mandatory national standard "Safety Requirements for Powered Batteries for Electric Vehicles" (GB38031-2025) organized by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology was recently released and will be implemented from July 1, 2026.
The new standard mainly revises the technical requirements for thermal diffusion testing, and has been revised from "providing thermal event alarm signals for 5 minutes before ignition and explosion" to "no fire, no explosion (although the alarm is still required), and the smoke will not cause harm to the occupants", further clarifying the temperature requirements of the battery to be tested, the up and down state, observation time, and vehicle testing conditions.
At the same time, the new standard has added a bottom impact test to test the protection ability after the bottom of the battery is impacted; a safety test after fast charging cycle is added, and an external short circuit test is carried out after 300 fast charging cycles is required to not catch fire or explode.
