Xinhua News Agency, Paris, April 17 (Reporter Luo Yu and Zhang Baihui) UNESCO issued a communiqué on the 17th saying that three documentary heritages from China are included in the "Memory of the World" and two geological parks have joined the World Geopark Network.
The communiqué said that these three documentary heritages include the "Suizhou Zenghou Yi Chime Bell" and "Shaolin Temple Stele (566-1990)" submitted by China and the "The Stele of the Buddha Temple of the Ceylon Mountain (February 15, 1409)" written by Zheng He jointly submitted by China and Sri Lanka. So far, a total of 18 documentary heritages in China have been included in the "Memory of the World List".
The communiqué said that with the addition of 74 new documentary heritages, the total number of heritages in the list has reached 570. These new heritages come from 72 countries and 4 international organizations, covering scientific revolution, women's contribution to history, and important nodes in the development of multilateralism.
The Memory of the World Project was created in 1992 to promote the protection and universal access to human literature heritage. The document forms included in the "Memory of the World" include books, manuscripts, maps, photos, recordings and images, which carry the common legacy of mankind.
In another communiqué on the day, UNESCO also approved two Chinese geological parks to join its World Geopark network, namely the UNESCO World Geopark located in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the UNESCO World Geopark in Yunyang in Chongqing. So far, a total of 49 geological parks in China have been approved for the list of the network, and the number continues to rank first in the world.
In addition, UNESCO has designated 14 new world geological parks. Up to now, the number of geological parks in the world has reached 229, distributed in 50 countries, covering an area of nearly 855,000 square kilometers.
The UNESCO World Geopark Logo was created in 2015 to certify geological heritage of international importance. Geopark combines the protection of important geological heritage with public publicity and sustainable development to contribute to local communities.
