Recently, the Ministry of Education announced the filing and approval results of undergraduate majors in general higher education institutions in 2024. A total of 1,839 new major points were added to universities across the country, 157 major points were adjusted for degree awards or study years, 2,220 major points were suspended, and 1,428 major points were abolished. The efforts to adjust and optimize majors were further strengthened.

The Ministry of Education simultaneously updated and released the "Catalogue of Undergraduate Majors in Ordinary Higher Education Institutions (2025)", adding 29 new majors. The new catalog includes 93 professional categories and 845 majors, further strengthening the rapid response of professional settings to national strategies urgently needed and high-quality development.

The 29 new majors added this time fully reflect the national strategy, market demand and scientific and technological development. In terms of serving national strategies, majors such as regional country science, carbon neutral science and engineering, marine science and technology, health and medical insurance have been added. Facing the forefront of scientific and technological development, majors such as intelligent molecular engineering, medical equipment and equipment engineering, and space-time information engineering have been added to actively adapt to market demand and have added majors such as international cruise management and aviation sports. At the same time, we will focus on artificial intelligence to empower economic and social development, and add majors such as artificial intelligence education, intelligent audio-visual engineering, and digital drama.

In order to respond to national strategies faster, the Ministry of Education has established a mechanism for the first time that the strategic urgently needed professional extraordinary settings are established. For the latest strategic areas that the central government has deployed and paid close attention to, it has opened a "green channel" for the immediate response of relevant professional settings. Aiming at the needs of rapid development of the low-altitude economy, breaking through the restrictions on centralized application, and guiding six universities including Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics to add low-altitude technology and engineering majors.

Currently, there are 62,800 undergraduate majors in colleges and universities nationwide. The Ministry of Education will further strengthen the linkage between major settings and employment, guide colleges and universities to continuously adjust and optimize existing majors, strengthen talent demand forecasting and analysis in various fields, and continuously enhance the compatibility between higher education and economic and social development.
